Unfortunately, they don’t have to do it because for years we have allowed them to not have to. When they offer less money, there are already non union members there to take the paltry sums. When asked to do more for less, there are willing designers that will gladly farm work out to non union shops or out of the country. When higher requests are made by members to leadership , sometimes we are asked to be happy with what we are being offered. When members resolve to stand and fight, some say that we should cut our losses and take what we can get. When candidates from disparate and unrepresented crafts ask for membership they are denied a seat at the table. All of this stuff is true because I have seen it with my own eyes. We need a culture of change in our movement. We need to create producers that come from our ranks. We need to cultivate business owners that have a vested interest in the union movement. We need to all learn to understand the economics that drive our industry as well as the greater economy and we need to start creating content that people want to watch. This isn’t about Ai taking our jobs, it is about us not creating the content that we want and being active participants in the creation of the content.

I send out my thanks to my friend, National Association of Voice Actors (NAVA) Board Member and actor, Michael Scott , who recently gave of his time to his fellow NAVA members in teaching a class on acting for video games 🎮 . And he did so right up against a flight he had to catch! It was a mile-a-minute whirlwind of helpful tips for working in this extremely lucrative area of voiceover (though also an area that is greatly in flux as it’s an area of union discussion at present). If you’re not already a member of #NAVA , I highly recommend joining, not only for access to Members classes like Michael’s here, but also to support one of the most supportive and pro-actor organizations on the planet. From the NAVA website: “NAVA is a social impact non-profit that advocates and promotes the advancement of the #voiceacting industry through action, education, inclusion, and benefits. 𝐕𝐎 𝐌𝐞𝐞𝐭𝐬 𝐒.𝐖.𝐀.𝐓. 𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠...(No, Seriously) When I first started my career in voice acting, I heard a lot of advice. One such nugget of wisdom was "NEVER perform for free." Well, when a member of your area's HNT (Hostage Negotiation Team) who is "involved in creating training scenarios that are fluid and dynamic and cover a gamut of emotions" and who also happens to know you are an actor asks for you to help their team in training simulations, well...I feel like the word "NEVER" is suddenly preceded by "𝐴𝑙𝑚𝑜𝑠𝑡." VO is an interesting career, to be certain. But today was definitely one of the more interesting. I was honored to once again help our men-and-women-in-bulletproof-blue (or...rather tan camo) with their training. I can't imagine any better use of my own training in improvisational acting than to aid in even some small way to the training of these amazing people who put put their lives on the line to keep us and our loved ones safe by making their simulations as real and believable as possible. Hopefully, I succeeded in that. Now, to be completely transparent, while there is a great deal of acting taking place over the first hour or so during the multiple phone conversations with the negotiating officer attempting to de-escalate the situation, the moment a team of heavily trained S.W.A.T members in full tactical gear breach the door of the home you are in to apprehend you, the "acting" quickly ends and the very real adrenaline and fear steps in for a turn. Just ask my shaking hands. So, if you are an actor looking for a way to 𝑡𝑟𝑢𝑙𝑦 test your improv skills while also helping the bravest among us to be the very best they can be, I have some advice of my own to give: consider volunteering to help with your own police force's training simulations. And don't worry! In my experience, the sim rounds don't hurt at all. At least...not when they hit you square in the face mask during the split second you lift your head only inches above the cover you were hiding behind to take (and miss) a couple shots of your own... ...Did I mention they were highly trained? Which brings me to my other piece of advice: Hey bad guys...just 𝒅𝒐𝒏'𝒕.
